Homemade Undies for Homeless Youth

Ummmm, undies? Yep. Super important to homeless youth. This is not only a fun craft, but it’s upcycled (our faves), it’s easy, and man, it gives a lotta love to some of our people that need it the most. There but for the grace of God go I, my friends. Hope comes from knowing people actually care enough to DO something for you, and hope is the kernel every person needs to get on the right path. Spread some hope, ladies. How can you do this? We’ve got all of the deets below…

The Low-Down:

Why should we care about homeless youth? Because there are more than 1 MILLION of them. Because lots of times, the reason they’re homeless is because they’ve been screwed by the system – aging out of foster care, not being eligible for safety nets like healthcare, and being victims of human trafficking. These kids? They’re our people, people. How on earth have they been so abandoned to get to this point? Ok, that’s another issue to tackle! Today, let’s take care of that one kid that you see on the streets. Give them a gift of love – and clean, new undies are massive love, peeps – and let them know that there ARE people that care about them. That’s all you need to kindle hope.

What’s what with Covenant House? They have a fantastic holistic approach to youth homelessness. To break the cycle of chronic adult homelessness and bridge the gap of support in the lives of our youth, Covenant House has developed three core services known as our Continuum of Care: Street Outreach, Crisis Care, and Rights of Passage.

These core services are comprised of a wide array of in-house training programs, including healthcare, educational support, GED preparation, job readiness and skills training, drug abuse treatment and prevention, legal services, mental health services, the Mother/Child program, life skills training, and aftercare. These programs are designed to provide our youth with a holistic approach to leaving the streets and achieving independence.

I personally like the superhero plan – empower those youth, peeps. And make yourself a pair, too :). Make the ones to give youth-sized (yep, the tutorial has those deets). Go here for the tutorial, and thank you so much to Jodi at Sew Fearless for the fantastic, easy to follow (this comes from a serious non-sewer) instructions!
