If a tree falls in a forest…

Empower yourself to change the world

That Cell Phone. It really does do everything.

“Can you hear me now?”

POTUS talked about it (yep, State of the Union was this week), all of the big countries just met about it, and Twitter blew up over it. Not talking Mobama’s dress (glorious, imo), nope, we’re talking Climate Change. Whether you like it or not, renewable resources are going to get a LOT of money in the years to come, and we can all give the trees some love. We’ve got some awesome ideas for you to be a part of it.

No time for partying.

Donate to help biogas

With renewable resources, people always think of solar, wind, and maybe geothermal. But there’s a better way, one that’s everywhere, that never runs out, and is free (or, actually, people will pay you to take it away). We’re talking poop, peeps.
Biogas is this awesome system that can be small enough for a house (in fact, you can install one in your house for less than $200) or big enough for a whole city. It takes your crap, captures the methane coming from it and then you burn it just like natural gas in your house – no smell, no more crap, and uber renewable (especially if you have small kids. Or cows). This is amazing for people everywhere, but for people in developing nations? Game Changer. Donate to Practical Action and send some biogas systems to people that need ’em.

I’m ready to do this.

Donate Cell Phones for Deforestation Help Climate Change

Cell Phones Stop Illegal Logging

Ok, this is our fave of the week, people! We all know that deforestation leads to more carbon dioxide in the air, which is a big no-no for climate change, yes? You can have the effect of taking 3,000 cars off the road – all from your own home. How exactly? Donate your old cell phones. Rainforest Connection takes them, wipes them clean, reprograms them, and fits them with solar panels. Then they send it to rainforests that are being illegally logged (HUGE problem in rainforested areas) and – get this – IT LISTENS FOR THE SOUND OF CHAINSAWS. Is that not the coolest idea ever?? If it hears them, it alerts local agencies so they can bust on in and take down those poachers. And it’s all thanks to your old ratty Razr. Check out the deets here.

Who needs love and hope? These guys.

Talking to yourself is okay. Answering back is risky.

So frankly we’re all freaking out about our broken prison system – from the State of the Union to El Chapo being back in black (and white, striped), people are talking about how we seem to be putting lots of people in jail with little effect. It turns out that a big portion are seriously mentally ill – in 44 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the largest prison or jail held more people with serious mental illness than the largest state psychiatric hospital. Pretty sure we can do better than that. Best option? Cut it off at the source.

I’m ready to do this.

make cards for mental illness patients

Make a Card for Patients with Mental Illness

Ever sent a card to a friend in the hospital with a mental illness? Me neither. Never even thought about it – but frankly, they probably need the hope and love more than anyone. Now you can make a card for mentally ill patients and make up for your boorishness. Best part? You can do it while watching Game of Thrones (actually, the Lannisters probably need a card, too). Check out all of the deets – and some fab tutorials – right here. Overcome your mental health illness? Option 2: Post a video of hope here.

No time for partying.

While making cards would be an insanely fun Giving Party with the ladies (and we all need time with the ladies, especially when it’s an insane week), we totally understand the insanity of life. Feeling like you want to do something but don’t want to DO something? Throw some money at the Mental Health Association of San Francisco – they’re one of our fully vetted orgs, so they’re good people. Not only do they have a wide array of programs addressing issues from suicide to hoarding, peer support and getting people to talk out to reduce the stigma of mental illness, but they’ve have provided leadership in mental health education, advocacy, research and service for nearly 60 years. Throw them some bones here.

Oh those Navy Boys. Never COULD read a map.

“Try to look unimportant. They may be low on ammo.”  -US Army Infantry Journal

Glaringly NOT mentioned by POTUS in the State of the Union, there was a bit of a dust-up between the U.S. Navy and Iran. Namely, Team Navy floated into Team Iran’s territory and Team Iran took Team Navy hostage (ah yes, the old hostage play). Fortunately Team ‘Murica got Team Navy back, and we can all go back to fixing our GPS systems. (DISCLAIMER: GO ARMY)

No time for partying.

This week too nuts? We hear ya. HELLO – a Giving Party with your girls (wine included) might be just the thing you need to chillax (yep, I said that word). But never fear, you’ve got another option. Probably the best way to give money that’s going to help soldiers? USO. From deployment to rehabilitation and reintegration, the USO has oodles of services for not only the soldiers, but their families too. Get the deets on donating here, and maybe they’ll buy those guys some sparkly new GPS watches.

I’m ready to do this.

Care Packages to Female SoldiersSend Care Packages to Female Soldiers

Guess what? There are still Americans stationed overseas (honestly, Team Aina keeps forgetting that). Guess what even more? Navy peeps are deployed wartime or not – they sail those seas hail, sleet, wind, or snow. Kind of like USPS of the seas. One of the worst parts about being overseas? Being lonely. And without tampons. No joke, being a femme on a deployment with a bunch of dudes? Gross. Become a Lady of Liberty and send her a care package. Deets here.
