Give Thanks: Knit a Blanket for Families of Organ Donors.

Knit a Blanket for Families of Organ DonorsSo organ donation is pretty rad, in our opinion. Make one last huzzah of leaving this world a better place? Talk about leaving your mark. If you haven’t yet signed up to be an organ donor (no judgement. we hadn’t either), go here and sign up – it couldn’t be easier. One of the things people don’t think about when donating organs is that, yes, there is family usually left behind when an organ donation happens. Spread love, gratitude, and community by making these family members a blanket to wrap up in when they’re feeling lonely.

Organization: Gift of Life Donor Program – Wrapped in Hugs

The Low-Down:

Founded in 1974 by the Greater Delaware Valley Society of Transplant Surgeons, Gift of Life is one of the oldest and largest of 58 organ procurement organizations (OPO) in the United States. Gift of Life is part of the nationwide organ and tissue sharing network run by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

In addition, Gift of Life coordinates life-enhancing tissue transplants for area residents who are in need of corneas for sight-restoring procedures, as well as skin, tissue and bone to repair injuries.

projects to change the world

Gift of Life partners with 130 acute care hospitals to offer families from around the region the option of donation.

Wrapped in Hugs was inspired by the 2010 US Transplant Games, where all donor families present received a hand-knitted or crocheted wrap at the National Donor Recognition Ceremony. Gift of Life Donor Program would like to do the same at their local ceremonies.
